Ceramic Coating FAQ: Answered Honestly
By Zane Phelps · July 8, 2026 · 6 min read
I get the same questions every week. People want to know if ceramic coating is actually worth it, how long it lasts, whether they need to prep their car first, and what separates a $200 job from a $900 one. Fair questions. At Zane's Detailing, I've done this work across Cumming, Alpharetta, Suwanee, and the rest of North Atlanta, and I'd rather give you straight answers than a sales pitch. So here's every question I regularly get, answered honestly.
What Is Ceramic Coating and What Does It Actually Do?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically to your car's paint. Once it cures, it forms a hard, semi-permanent protective layer on top of the clear coat. That layer repels water, resists UV damage, makes the paint easier to wash, and adds noticeable gloss depth. It is not a scratch-proof force field. It does not replace paint protection film. But it is the single best thing you can do to protect your factory paint and keep your car looking sharp for years without constant waxing.
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last?
That depends entirely on what product goes on your car and how well the prep work is done. At Zane's Detailing I offer three tiers:
- 1-Year Graphene (Adams Graphene) — Priced from $349 for sedans, $399 for SUVs, $449 for trucks. This is a solid entry-level coating. Great if you want to test the benefits before committing long-term, or if you drive a daily driver you plan to trade in soon.
- 2-Year Ceramic (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light + EXOv4) — Priced from $649 for sedans, $699 for SUVs, $749 for trucks. Crystal Serum Light is a professional-grade product. The EXOv4 topcoat adds slickness and extra water behavior on top of it. This combo gives you real durability with noticeably better looks than the entry tier.
- 5-Year Ceramic (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra) — Priced from $899 for sedans, $949 for SUVs, $999 for trucks. Crystal Serum Ultra is one of the hardest, most durable coatings available to professional detailers. If you're keeping your vehicle long-term and you want the best protection available, this is the one.
Realistic lifespan depends on how you maintain the car after coating. If you run it through automatic brushwash every week, you'll shorten it. If you hand wash with pH-neutral soap and keep it out of harsh environments when possible, you'll get the full rated life and then some.
Does My Car Have to Be Clean Before You Arrive?
No, you don't need to do anything special. I handle all the prep on-site. That includes a full wash, clay bar decontamination, and paint correction if needed. The surface has to be completely clean and free of contaminants before any coating goes down. If I showed up and just applied product over a dirty car, the coating would bond to the dirt and fail early. That's not how I work.
Do I Need Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coating locks in whatever condition your paint is in. If there are swirl marks, light scratches, or water spots on the clear coat before I apply the coating, they will still be there after — and actually more visible because the gloss amplifies everything underneath. I always inspect the paint before booking and I'll tell you honestly what it needs. Some cars need a full one-step polish. Some need minimal work. Some newer cars with clean paint are ready to go. I'm not going to upsell you on correction you don't need, but I'm also not going to coat a car that's going to look worse for it.
How Long Does the Application Take?
Plan on a full day. Most jobs run six to eight hours depending on the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint, and which package you're getting. The 5-year Crystal Serum Ultra takes longer to apply and has specific cure window requirements between coats. After application, the coating needs to cure before the car gets wet — typically 24 hours for light exposure, and I'll give you specific instructions for your vehicle when I wrap up.
Can You Do This at My House?
That's exactly how I operate. Zane's Detailing is 100% mobile. I come to your driveway in Cumming, Alpharetta, Suwanee, Gainesville, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, Buford — wherever you are in North Atlanta. You don't drop your car off somewhere and wait. You go about your day while I work. The only thing I need from you is a reasonably flat surface, access to an outdoor water spigot, and a standard 120V outlet. Most driveways work perfectly.
Is Ceramic Coating Worth It on a Used or Older Vehicle?
It can be, yes. The key question is whether the paint is in good enough shape to be worth protecting. I've coated plenty of used cars that had clean paint and an owner who planned to keep the vehicle for years. Ceramic coating on a well-maintained used car still gives you the same protection benefits — easier washing, UV resistance, better gloss. If the paint has significant damage or fading, we'd talk about correction options first. But age alone doesn't disqualify a car.
What's the Difference Between Wax, Sealant, and Ceramic Coating?
Wax is temporary — it breaks down in weeks. Sealant lasts a few months. Ceramic coating is a semi-permanent bond that lasts years. They are not the same category of product. Wax and sealant sit on top of the paint and wash away. Ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat and becomes part of the surface. The hydrophobic effect, scratch resistance, and gloss you get from a proper ceramic coating simply cannot be replicated by wax or sealant. I'm not saying those products are useless — they're better than nothing — but if you're comparing them to what Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra does, there's no real comparison.
How Much Does It Cost and How Do I Book?
Pricing is straightforward. The 1-year Adams Graphene starts at $349 for sedans. The 2-year Gtechniq package starts at $649. The 5-year Crystal Serum Ultra starts at $899. SUVs run $50 more, trucks run $100 more across the board. There's no tax on auto detailing services in Georgia, so the price I quote is the price you pay. I take a $50 deposit to hold your spot, and the remainder is due when the job is done.
Why Do You Have 36 Five-Star Reviews?
Because I show up, I do the job right, and I don't cut corners. Every coating I apply gets the same prep, the same attention to the paint, and the same professional-grade products regardless of which package you choose. I'm not running a volume shop. I'm one person who takes this seriously and stands behind the work.
