What NOT to Do After Getting Your Car Ceramic Coated

By Zane Phelps · April 28, 2026 · 4 min read

Getting a ceramic coating applied to your car is one of the best investments you can make for paint protection. But here's the thing — the coating doesn't reach full hardness the moment I pack up my gear and pull out of your driveway in Cumming. The first week after application is critical, and I've seen people undo a solid coating job in 48 hours by making completely avoidable mistakes. This post covers exactly what not to do after getting your car ceramic coated, so you get every bit of value out of the protection you paid for.

Don't Wash the Car for at Least 7 Days

This is the one I have to stress the most. Whether you got the 1-year Adams Graphene starting at $349 or went all the way up to the 5-year Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra at $899, the coating needs time to cure and cross-link properly with your paint. Water, soap, and friction during that window can disrupt the bonding process before it's complete.

Seven days minimum. If it rains, that's fine — light rain isn't the same as a pressure wash or a sponge dragging across the surface. Just don't intentionally wash it, and don't drive through a car wash. I tell every customer this before I leave, and I'm telling you again here because it's that important.

Stay Away From Automated Car Washes — Period

This applies even after the coating is fully cured. Automatic car washes with spinning brushes and abrasive cloth strips will scratch your coating and eventually cut through it. The whole point of a ceramic coating is to protect your paint from swirl marks and light scratches. Running it through a tunnel wash defeats that completely.

If you want to wash the car yourself after the curing period, use the two-bucket method with a clean microfiber wash mitt and a pH-neutral soap. That's it. No dish soap, no all-purpose cleaners, nothing with wax or sealant added — those can interfere with the coating's hydrophobic properties.

Don't Park Under Trees or in Direct Sunlight Right After Application

Tree sap, bird droppings, and pollen are the enemies of a fresh coating. During the first week, these contaminants can bond into the coating before it fully hardens. Bird droppings especially — the uric acid in them is aggressive, and if they bake onto a fresh surface in the Georgia heat, you've got a problem.

Park in a garage if you have one. If you don't, try to find covered parking or at least avoid sitting under pine trees or oaks. This is one reason I prefer doing installs in shaded driveways when possible. Being mobile means I can work in your garage or carport in Cumming, Alpharetta, Suwanee, or wherever you're located — which actually gives the coating a better environment to start curing in.

Don't Let Contaminants Sit on the Surface

Once the coating is cured, it makes cleanup much easier — but it doesn't make your car bulletproof. If a bird hits your hood or tree sap lands on your roof, don't leave it there. Remove it as soon as you notice it using a detail spray safe for coated vehicles and a clean microfiber towel. The longer acidic or sticky contaminants sit, the harder they are to remove without aggressive correction.

With the Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra, you have a 9H hardness coating that resists a lot — but even that has its limits when it comes to prolonged chemical exposure. Maintenance matters.

Don't Use the Wrong Products

I've seen customers go buy a random spray wax from the auto parts store thinking it'll boost their ceramic coating. It won't — and some products can actually leave a hazy residue on top of a coated surface that's a pain to remove. Stick to products specifically designed for ceramic-coated vehicles. If you want to add a layer of topper for extra water beading, I'd recommend something like Gtechniq's own spray-on products designed to layer over their coatings.

When in doubt, ask me. Seriously — I'd rather answer a quick question than have someone mess up a coating I just spent hours applying.

Don't Skip Regular Maintenance Washes

A ceramic coating is not a set-it-and-forget-it solution. Think of it as a high-performance surface that still needs regular attention. Washing every two to four weeks keeps the coating performing at its best and prevents contaminants from building up and degrading the hydrophobic layer over time.
