What to Expect at Your Ceramic Coating Appointment
By Zane Phelps · April 28, 2026 · 4 min read
If you've never had a ceramic coating done before — or you've heard horror stories about cars sitting at a shop for two or three days — let me walk you through exactly what happens when you book with Zane's Detailing in Cumming, GA. No surprises, no upsells at the last minute, no dropping your car off and wondering what's happening to it. You're home the whole time. Here's what a real mobile ceramic coating appointment looks like from start to finish.
Before the Appointment: The $50 Deposit and Booking
To lock in your appointment, I ask for a $50 deposit upfront. That holds your spot and tells me you're serious. The remainder is due when the job is done — not before. You'll pick your package when you book, so I show up with the right product and the right plan. If you're not sure which package fits your situation, I'm happy to talk through it. The three options I offer are the 1-year Adams Graphene ($349 for sedans, $399 for SUVs, $449 for trucks), the 2-year Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light + EXOv4 ($649/$699/$749), and the 5-year Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra ($899/$949/$999). Each one is a real step up in protection and durability — not just a price difference on paper.
Day of the Appointment: What You Need to Have Ready
Since I come to you — your driveway, your home, anywhere in the Cumming or North Atlanta area — there are a few things that make the job go smoothly.
- A clean, shaded area if possible. Direct sunlight bakes product onto paint faster than I can work with it. A garage or shaded driveway is ideal, but I'll work with what you have.
- Access to a water spigot. I need a water source to rinse the car during the wash stage.
- The car should be reasonably accessible. I'm not asking you to do anything to it beforehand — that's my job — just don't park it under a tree that's actively dropping sap.
I serve Cumming, Alpharetta, Suwanee, Gainesville, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, Buford, and the surrounding North Atlanta area. Wherever you are, I pull up with everything I need in the truck.
The Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Wash and Decontamination
Every appointment starts with a full wash. I'm not just rinsing the car — I'm doing a proper two-bucket wash, iron decontamination, and clay bar treatment. Ceramic coating bonds directly to your clear coat, so if there's contamination, fallout, or old product sitting on the paint, the coating won't bond the way it's supposed to. This stage takes longer than most people expect, and that's fine. It's the foundation everything else is built on.
Step 2: Paint Correction (If Needed)
Ceramic coating is not a fix for swirl marks, scratches, or water spots. It locks in whatever condition the paint is in when I apply it. I always do a thorough inspection before coating, and I'll be upfront with you about what I see. If your paint has significant defects, I'll let you know what a correction would involve before we move forward. I'm not going to coat over a mess and pretend it didn't happen — I've seen that done and it's not something I'm willing to do.
Step 3: Panel Wipe and Prep
Once the paint is clean and corrected, I wipe every panel down with a panel prep solution to remove any remaining oils, polishing residue, or fingerprints. This is the last thing that happens before the coating goes on. It's a short step but a critical one.
Step 4: Coating Application
This is where the package matters. The Adams Graphene goes on as a single layer — great hydrophobic protection for a one-year commitment. The Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light gets followed by a layer of EXOv4 on top, giving you a harder base with a slicker topcoat. The Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra is the most durable coating I carry — a harder formula that's backed for five years. Each product has its own application window and flash time, and I follow the manufacturer's process exactly. No shortcuts.
Step 5: Cure Time and Aftercare Instructions
After the coating is applied, I'll go over aftercare with you in person. The big one: keep the car dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. No rain, no washing. After that, the coating continues to harden over the next few weeks. I'll tell you what to use and what to avoid when washing going forward — not because I want to make it complicated, but because the right wash routine is what keeps the coating performing the way it should.
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
Most appointments run between 4 and 6 hours depending on the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint, and which package you've selected. The 5-year Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra jobs on trucks or SUVs can push toward the longer end. I'd rather take the time to do it right than rush through a job on a car you're trusting me with.
